This award is the most prestigious architecture prize for healthcare environments. It recognises an outstanding project that excels in sustainability, optimises patient care, and enhances the well-being and comfort of staff, patients, and their families. The new Main Building, previously a category winner in 2023 for healthcare facilities over 25,000m², was reassessed alongside all winners from the past decade. At the upper floors these are supplied with a steel railing, in the plinth they are supplied with glass railings. Havenkade’s position on the water’s edge creates the opportunity to connect with the view of the harbour and river Waal, as well as main bike route along the dike towards the city centre. The inner courtyard opens to the harbour, making a connection with the public waterfront and landscape. Hessenberg is a spot in the inner city of Nijmegen with a rich history which can be traced back to the Roman Occupation. In recent centuries the site has been occupied by monasteries and the regional newspaper De Gelderlander. Within a masterplan by Bob van Reeth four blocks were developed. They are randomly scattered over the project and sit on large shared underground parking garages. Horizontal lintels are juxtaposed by brick piers, between which sit recessed brickwork planes with window frames.The award ceremony took place in Milan during the three-day ‘World Congress on Design & Health’, organised by the International Academy for Design & Health.
