The long low plinth on the south side sculpts the urban space of Oude Stationstraat, which is mostly used by pedestrians coming from the station. The transparent ground floor facade is occupied by retail; a setback here marks the entrance to the cinema. The north side is reserved for car access and service areas, with the 35-meter-high main volume towering over the railway. CONNECTINGThe transformation of the museum started in 2017. With the renovation, the building has been expanded by over 1.100 m2 in exhibition and public space, on top of the 1,350 m2 in the original monument. The museum now has 1,935 m2 of state-of-the-art exhibition space. After approval they start with the actual design process for a self chosen programme and location. The students are supervised by tutors form the institute and an external architect. Each year the best graduation project is sent to the Dutch Archiprix. ArtEZ Academy of Architecture also participates in Archiprix International. The soaring and visually stimulating architecture complements the way rail track levels, bus and trolley-bus routes and the pedestrian experience allow the various floors of the public transport terminal to merge seamlessly into the outdoor spaces. The building's distinctive circular design presented ACN Totale Afbouw with a range of customisation challenges during the renovation process. Once through the entrance doors, a visitor enters an environment that does not look like a typical office. Impressive and seasonally colourful Acer specimen trees, impressively spot lit at night, project the green identity of Arnhem. Landmark Arnhem was an almost-vacant landmark office building located on the A235 which has been totally transformed into a vibrant multi-tenant space. Architects have direct impact and influence on society, and make an important contribution to it daily.Backed by the Dutch government, the new 21,750m2 terminal includes shops, a conference centre, and links to a nearby office plaza, the city centre and an underground parking garage. The Netherlands has a large population of international students so you won’t feel alone. The scale and complexity of Arnhem Central demanded an innovative approach. UNS employed its ‘Deep Planning’ methodology, a process that fuses time, user movement, and programmatic needs into a unified system. This approach allowed the station to evolve into a hybrid space where different functions coexist under a continuous roof structure, creating one of the most significant gateways into Arnhem. Representatives of the so-called 'Arnhem School' (such as Bas Maters, Peter Struiken, Wim Korvinus) have in the past influenced the visual character of education. All the spatial elements relate to the space’s monumental columns in the space. These were the only part of the existing structure that had to be retained, therefore all the benches, shop displays and bar are positioned around them. To counter balance the height and light of the dome, all the elements have been designed to be dark and ‘heavy’. Low and high custom-made wooden tables are paired with bespoke benches that back onto four of the columns. The benches are upholstered with two types of eco-leather that contrast with the roughness of the wood. The station works on international, national and regional levels, allowing passengers to move between cities intuitively and with ease. This project is part of a countrywide railway upgrade that will see new stations in Rotterdam, Delft, The Hague, Breda and Utrecht. Display volumes pop out of the floor as you approach it, generating a dynamic, welcoming atmosphere. Glass and steel are used for the different display elements, with pastel pink tones offering a subtle background for the objects on display. On bezoek deze pagina of the vitrines, the colours travel in a gradient from transparent to pink. The whole structure is detailed with metal profiles and mirror backgrounds that play with reflections. The new exhibition spaces support the collection and the changing exhibitions. These quiet rooms with uninterrupted walls are interspersed with spaces that are open and offer a free view of the landscape and the city through large, continuous windows, making optimal use of and emphasize the unique location of the museum. This rhythm of introvert and extrovert, the experience of man-made art and the different landscape types makes a visit to the new Museum Arnhem a stimulating and varied experience. We began the masterplan in 1996 and completed its first sketch design for the Transfer Terminal back in 2000. After intensively researching passenger flows and transportation modes, we proposed that the new terminal should expand to become a ‘transfer machine’ that incorporates the whole spectrum of public transport, meeting the travel demands of the 21st century. Working with structural engineers Arup, a space without columns was produced, forming an architectural expression designed around the ways people will intuitively use the space.
